Lordi, Lord Lord! A full day of adventure in Finnish Lapland!

Man, did Grandpa and Ritva have a full day lined up for us today! We decided early on that we wanted to do a daytrip in Finland and check out either the arctic circle or the wildlife zoo or Santa Land, or all of the above. We ended up deciding that we wanted to head up to the arctic circle with a stop for lunch or dinner at ’Lordi’s Rocktaurant’, which is a themed restaurant owned by monster-rocker Lordi, Finland’s pride and the only Finn who has ever won the Eurovision Song Contest for Finland.

Off we went and our first stop was the city of Rovaniemi and Lordi’s. The restaurant/rocktaurant had a bit of a ’Hard Rock Café meets Terror on Elm Street’ feel to it, which was pretty cool. We had expected that it would be a traditional sit down restaurant with waiters and all that but was more of a burger joint where you order over the counter, but that was fine. The burgers totally made up for it! We walked out of there full and happy with another eating experience under our belts so it was all good!

After the feast in the creepy restaurant we hopped in the car again and drove up to the well known arctic circle and the adjoining Santa Claus Village where, I kid you not, Santa himself lives (we met him) and runs his Clausal Post Office with an iron fist (we know, we tried the service by sending a postcard to one of you readers.) We obviously had to jump around on the arctic circle line just to make sure we ’crossed it good’ and we also ended up doing a short but really cool walking tour through Santa HQ and then through the neverending souvenir shops. Oh, and Shaena spotted her first ever Finnish gypsy!

When we were done in Santa’s world, we had just one more stop to do before heading back home to Sweden: Trout fishing! Ritva really wanted to go catch a trout so we drove up to this pond where they keep Trouts and you just pay to catch a fish and you are guaranteed to get one. Shaena got to try angling for Trout for the first time and got a decent sized fishy that we asked to have warm smoked. Apparently it was really tasty!

On the way home we passed the arctic circle again on the scenic route to Haparanda and as you can see from the photos, young master Ethan fell asleep listening to mommy’s music on her phone. He was most likely dreaming about Trouts and Santas and Elfs and his new cuddly pillow that he got as a pressie from Grandpa and Ritva.
